What Is a Human Machine Interface?

A Human Machine Interface or HMI is the graphical display that represents a machine, process, or facility so that the user can easily, intuitively control and monitor the status of such a system.

A simple machine will require a simple interface for the user and not require a HMI. A few indicator lights, some push buttons and switches will be all that is needed to operate a simple machine, say one that presses parts into a casting of some sorts. To quickly give you an idea of what the lights and push buttons would do, is to inform the operator that a part was in place and ready for the next step along the line to a finished piece. The operator would know now the machine is ready, add another component to the part and push the appropriate button to begin the next action.

Way before there where the great color displays of today, a panel (metal, plastic or even wood) would be created and imprinted with a simplified version of the actual process. At key points on this panel, holes wold be drilled and indicators and pilot lights installed. This panel would be mounted on the wall and the panel for the switchgear such as push buttons and selector switches, mounted below. Typically placed at desk height to allow the operator to control the machine or process.

Keep in mind that the Human Machine Interface is just...well... an interface. What I mean is that the real control and intelligence is handled by a controller, usually a PLC, although integrated HMI/PLCs are available. The HMI sends a request for an action by a graphic push button pressed by the operator to the controller. In turn an action is performed though the intelligence programmed into the controller and the machine actual producing the action. The PLC through sensors placed on the machine can send this status to the HMI.

The HMI can be a self-contained touch screen device made specifically to be used with a particular brand of PLC or controller. While others are more universal and can be used with many controllers since they have most communication protocol included or communication drivers available. Usually, you will see these mounted right on the enclosure door of a control cabinet. The HMI is also the user's front end to a SCADA system's controls and databases. Essentially SCADA is the top level of control of a network of PLCs controlling a large, complex process.

Other HMIs make use of a software package and adapter for a common PC. The adapter card is inserted into the PC to enable connection to a specific communication medium and protocol of the control system. Depending on the supplier and the power and complexity, the software package will contain a development system and run-time license. In this way a developer can have one system for creating the design of the HMI and multiple less costly run-time licenses for use on every machine.

Good design is necessary to obtain the most benefit from a Human Machine Interface. The Screens that are created, how they are laid out and how it all flows together can make a huge difference. Generally a Main Screen, Overview screen for each main area or system, a Current Alarms and Alarms History screen are a good start. The Overview screen will provide access to more detailed sub screens through a grouping of push buttons and/or logical drill down points on the Overview screen. Easy navigation to and from connected processes is necessary as well as to the main screens.

Choosing the correct graphics from the included library and creating your own is important for depicting your machine or process so that operator will learn quickly and not become confused.

Paperless Telecommuting

Much has been said and written about telecommuting in the past decades, and the number of people who work from home has increased dramatically, and will continue to increase, because of the trends outlined earlier. A telecommuter replaces his/her daily commute to the workplace with electronic communication, through the phone and Internet. While many telecommuters have dedicated home offices from which they perform work tasks, some telecommuters, called nomad workers, perform work tasks from any number of locations such as cafés, bookstores and libraries.

While telecommuting has been promoted by many organizations and enterprises, it is also associated with some disadvantages, both for the employer and the employee. To some degree, these criticisms have hampered the implementation of telecommuting programs. But these points of disadvantage, in many cases, can be resolved through paperless practices with Information & Communication Technology ICT devices and software. Going paperless will facilitate many aspects of telecommuting, and I will address some of these here.

Telecommuters often find themselves isolated, because they lack face-to-face interaction with colleagues, supervisors and clients. And this dearth of personal interactions with colleagues can even lead to a lack of loyalty toward employers and colleagues.

When telecommuting is done in a paper-based fashion, the telecommuter still ends up confined to a location, with limited mobility and complicated practices regarding the access, distribution and sharing of documents and work files. A paperless workstyle that enables total mobility of the office, however, will allow workers to more easily arrange and engage in personal, face-to-face interactions with others. A paperless workstyle can deliver telecommuters from the boundaries of their home office, and allow for the occasional nomadic workstyle that will bring them into contact with colleagues or simply other people, instead of being isolated at their homes. A paperless office can also enable the telecommuter to occasionally use the employer's leased or rented office facilities to interact in a more direct way with colleagues and supervisors.

To develop and maintain friendships with colleagues and supervisors while telecommuting, an employee or employer can ritualize routines in which co-workers engage in daily chat sessions, or have their cyber-coffee together at specific pre-arranged times. Another bonding mechanism might be for colleagues to interact in a more informal manner by playing stimulating games with each other through the Internet.

One of the reasons that face-to-face communication is so important is that a large proportion of communications taking place between two or more individuals is conveyed by nonverbal means such as body language, facial expressions, eye contact and tone of voice. The information conveyed through these types of communication will obviously become compromised through a phone, or even a regular webcam.

Virtual teams, also called Geographically Dispersed Teams (GDT), consist of people who work together across time, space and even organizational boundaries, through ICT. A member of a virtual team is not necessarily synonymous with a teleworker, though, for a couple of reasons: (1) that team member may not exclusively work from home, and (2) virtual teams frequently consist of employees who work both from home but also in smaller groups in offices at different geographic locations. Virtual teams enable hiring and retainment of talent regardless of location. It is obvious how paperless work practices can greatly facilitate the operations of dispersed, or virtual, work teams. Because they rely on electronic communication, they can greatly benefit from paperless practices in document sharing and mobility. Although LEDs were first installed by DIY'ers and were of dubious effectiveness, LEDs have quickly improved in output and light quality and now surpass most halogen and fluorescent marine lights in color quality, efficiency, longevity and light output. Even better, the small size of the LED and its ability to operate on direct current without any need for ballast or special transformers makes it an ideal lighting solution for the oftentimes space challenged confines of a boat.

With the growth in popularity of LEDs within boating circles, aftermarket manufacturers were quick to jump into the fray and begin offering LED lighting products capable of directly replacing the traditional incandescent fixtures on boats. Whether it's an entire fixture to be replaced, or simply a bulb, there are now likely several LED options available that will fit the bill. Easy to install, lasting for in some cases up to ten years, LEDs have certainly come into their own as far as the boating community is concerned. Sure there are holdouts, but more often than not, once they see for themselves just how effective the light output and energy savings from LEDs really is, they come down off the fence in short order.

LEDs are so much more efficient than incandescent bulbs because they produce light in a totally different way. Rather than heating a filament to produce light, which results in most of the electrical energy being wasted as heat, LEDs produce light through a process called electroluminescence. Rather than go into long and complicated explanations, suffice it to say that in an LED, electricity is fed to a specially coated type of semi-conducting material, which sort of rearranges the electrons and then emits them as photons, which is more commonly known as visible light. Since this process does not rely on electrical resistance to literally heat a filament until it is hot enough to emit light radiation and heat, it is much more efficient as little electrical energy is wasted. Instead, little energy is required to produce electroluminescence, and more of the energy is emitted as light. Even better, since the process only works one way in an LED, direct or DC current is the native type of power for an LED. This means no ballasts, inverters, or converters are needed to power an LED. In most cases, LED marine lights instead use solid state electronics to manage the flow of electricity to the LEDs. These electronics are known as LED drivers and are very compact and durable. LED drivers work to keep a steady current level going into the LED and allow a wide variety of voltages to be used, usually anywhere from 9 to 50 VDC. For boaters with 12 or 24VDC electrical systems, this means that hooking up LED lights can be as simple as screwing in a bulb or wiring in a light fixture.

Although the cost of an LED fixture is higher than an incandescent, the allure of the LED remains great due to their extreme efficiency and long life-span. If you consider that an average cruiser can use up to 70-100 amps just powering all of its lights, and that LEDs can cut that use by three quarters, it's clear there's a lot of savings in fuel use to be had. Additionally, when you realize that a typical halogen boat light rarely lasts more than a season or two, and that LEDs can last for up to ten years, the savings in bulb replacements alone can pay for the LED fixture in short order. Particularly with exterior illumination, like with spreader lights, LEDs quite simply make the halogens that came before them obsolete. Consider the Magnalight 40 Watt LED Light bar for instance. Compact, drawing only 40 watts, and using only 3 amps, this light produces 3,600 lumens. This is as much light as 4-5 50 watt halogen lamps that would normally need at least 12-16 amps to provide the same performance. Better, the LEDs are sealed, impervious to shattering, and produce very little heat. Add in that the LEDs will last for at least 40-50,000 hours or more as compared to the halogens 500-1500 hours, and you have what is commonly known as a no brainer decision.

Although LEDs remain a bit more expensive than incandescent bulbs, the savings in power and maintenance costs are simply too significant to make their initial cost a valid or prohibitive consideration. Long life, significant savings in energy and fuel consumption, and all around better lighting quality is making LEDs the new lighting of choice for boaters of all stripes regardless of whether they have a weekender or a long range full on cruiser.

Moore's Law: 1960s Vision, Current Reality

In September of 1962, John F. Kennedy articulated his now famous vision that launched the U.S. space program: "We choose to go to the moon in this decade." These words set into motion a space race that culminated in Neil Armstrong's moon walk seven years later on July 20, 1969. The full text of Kennedy's '62 speech reveals that his space challenge was part of a larger theme, namely the breathtaking pace of technological change being harnessed for the future. Kennedy's was just one of several visions about scientific progress in the '60s that would transform the world.

Another was a powerful prediction that completely changed the technology industry and its economics. In 1965 Gordon Moore, one of the founding fathers of the computer industry (he co-founded Intel), created one of the most widely known principles in the field of IT. Moore's Law predicted that the number of transistors on a chip would double about every two years. It further promised lower costs and increased innovation as a direct outcome.

To maintain status quo in today's marketplace, it is imperative for business leaders to develop proactive strategies for technology and data management based on Moore's prediction, including: 1) Invest wisely - find the right strategic partners; 2) Start small, learn and gain some early wins; 3) Organize for success; and 4) Think differently about data.

For forty years the industry has focused on the cost/productivity side of Moore's prediction, for the most part ignoring his more subtle but also more powerful message about the accelerating pace of innovation. In hindsight it's not surprising that the pace of innovation and our ever increasing appetite for technology have driven overall IT costs higher. This is now creating pressure on operating plans and tension between CIOs and CFOs of corporations whose CEOs had expected IT costs would be declining because of the populist belief regarding the trajectory of the IT industry.

A 2008 International Data Corporation (IDC) study projected that, in 2010, the world would create more than 1,200 exabytes of data (one exabyte is one quintillion bytes of data). This projection proved true, forcing retailers and fast moving consumer goods manufacturers to become increasingly proficient at finding new insights in large amounts of data. Historically, data was aggregated because the complexity of queries required it, or because disaggregated data didn't exist or was too costly.

Traditionally, companies have utilized data to understand what happened yesterday or today. To compete in the marketplace, data is now being used to predict what will happen in the future. To do so, companies are increasingly capturing real-time disaggregated data and analyzing information flows in real time, improving their ability to accurately project the future. In his books The Power of Now and The Power to Predict, Vivek Ranadive describes an evolution over time to event-driven business models where the need for real-time information is creating a "data explosion." Ranadive reaffirms that CPU, memory and storage costs have declined over the past 40 years as Moore predicted, but the costs to store and process exponentially increasing amounts of data, and the need for smart people to analyze it, have increased at the same rate. This is the paradox of Moore's Law.

As companies consider strategies for managing and productizing data, there are multiple needs to be met. So I have approx 86.00 in this unit and could sell it for $250.00 easily. I like Amazon for parts because you can choose which company to buy from and most the time shipping is free.

So your selling process in this business is: Buy the computer parts on Property Room. You will need hard drives and power cords which can be purchased on Amazon and eBay.com. I also use Compuvest to buy parts at big discounts. They have clearance specials that can be purchased for almost nothing. You can then buy your software cheap on Amazon for the finished product to sell online. Once you start this process your business will grow and you will be able to stock more parts and sell more units online at large profit.

Intel Core I3 Vs Core I5 Vs Core I7 Processors

i3 vs i5 vs i7 - Wouldn't it be nice if we had a way to easily decide which processor was right for us? First off what do all of these numbers mean?

Codename = SandyBridge

Sandybridge is Intel's newest architecture/offering that was released in January 2011. This is still the fastest and most efficient architecture to date. It comes in three offerings, or flavors so to speak: the i3, i5, i7. Let's begin by shedding some light on what these numbers mean, and what these processors have in common with one another.

i3-XXXX, i5-XXXX, i7-XXXX is the first way to tell if the processor you are looking at is truly the new SandyBridge architecture as they just switched to a 4 model number. Now, each of these offerings may also have a (K), (T), (S), (M).

The K stands for an unlocked multiplier. What this allows the user to do is to increase the multiplier on the cpu core without having to increase the fsb in order to achieve a higher clock speed. This is referred to as overclocking your processor. It is not warranted by Intel and should only be used by the most hardcore of PC users and builders as it can cause premature failure of the i3, i5, and i7.

The S and T stand for low-power and Ultra-Low-Power. While the M stands for mobile, which I am sure you already guessed. The mobile version is of course used in laptops only.

With speed comes power consumption unfortunately.

The two fastest processors are the i5-2500 and i7-2600 with the only difference being more l3 cache on the 2600 and the addition of Hyper-Threading.

These processors do use the 95W power design which is slightly higher power consumption than the other offerings. For the average user the Hyper-Threading will not make much of a difference to justify the price jump from the i5 to the i7.

However, if you are a student who is studying video/photography in school or a father who loves capturing his family on camera then the i7 is for you. The i7 allows for much better video and photo editing/encoding due to the Hyper-Threading technology.

I am sure you are asking yourself now, "What is Hyper-Threading? I see it mentioned over and over again when it comes to the i3 vs i5 vs i7 discussion but, am still a little confused as to the meaning behind it".

Well, Hyper-Threading is a term coined by Intel to describe its technology which improves upon the ability to perform multiple tasks with ease.

The way it works is for every physical core the application creates, a virtual core is also created. This in turn allows the application to share the work load between both the physical core and the virtual core. This essentially transforms a dual core (2 cores) into a quad core (4 cores) or a quad core (4 cores) into an 8 core. This may sound awesome, but remember not all applications have the ability to use hyperthreading.

The most common instance of this is PC Gaming. The majority of video games on the PC do not support hyperthreading which is why most pc gamers save some money by going with the i5-2500k (no Hyper-Threading) vs the i7-2600k (Hyper-Threading).

For a gamer the i7 does not justify the $100 price markup however, for the video editor the Hyper-Threading significantly increases performance by up to 30% in some cases making it a worth while investment.

When the iPad was launched, the idea doing the rounds in various tech blogs was that the iPad was meant for content consumption rather than content creation. This, more or less sums up the functionality of the devices in question.

HTC Puccini Honeycomb Review

HTC is a Company located in Taiwan. Formerly known as the High Tech Computer Corporation, they are known to manufacture some of the best Smartphones on the market. HTC's first set of Smartphones were made based on the Microsoft Operating System, in 2009 they diverted from Windows Operating System and started creating phones that used the Android Operating System, they also produced a Windows 7 Smartphone in 2010.

Whilst Smartphones were once the wave of the future, there have been new devices that have slowly started taking over; they are Tablet PCs. HTC were not to be left out of this game, hence the creation of their first android tablet; the HTC Puccini Honeycomb that has 4G capabilities in the United States. This tablet is said to be created with a 1280 x 800 WXGA display, a 1.5 Hz dual-core processor, and the Qualcomm Snapdragon MSM8660.

HTC Puccini is said to be one of the most awaited tablets by consumers and is hopefully launched in September or October 2011. While the designs of the HTC Puccini Honeycomb are set in stone, the full details and features including full specifications have yet to be released; but everyone still believes the new device will be an incredible market leader.

This tablet is rumoured to be sporting a 10.1 display touch screen, which is no different to most android devices being released this year, along with a 1.5 GHz CPU. Puccini is truly innovative, the HTC Puccini Honeycomb is a follow-up from the first tablet that uses the same stylus of the first tablet. This tablet will be connected to the AT&T's 4G LTE network and it is rumoured that it may be connected to the 5GB plan or the $50 plan that was announced by the network recently.

With this tablet PC, you get an 8 mega pixel camera at the back that sports a dual LED that is said to be a true competitor to the Samsung Galaxy 10.1v. It is built with the latest Android software which is the 3.0.1 version; including the HTC Sense 3.0 experience.

How to Safely Clean Laptop Keys

OK, so the other day you spilled a bit of soda onto your new laptop keyboard, and the next day arrives and some of the laptop keys do not come back up when you press them down. That is no big deal. There is no reason to send your laptop away to have its keyboard replaced. It can cost $50 to have a laptop's keyboard replaced. All that is needed to clean them are a few household items.

Disclaimer: I am not responsible if you incorrectly pop off and break the mechanism under your keyboard keys ending up with a broken computer. Some keys, mainly the non-square ones, are trickier to get off and are sometimes not as simple as just "popping them off" because they have metal prongs or clasps.

Materials Needed:

1 cue-tip per couple of keyboard keysglass of watera small thin object used as leverage to pop off the laptop key (pocket-knife, car key, etc)

Directions:

Make sure your computer is off when working with the hardware. Normally, pouring liquid onto just your keyboard is not that harmful, but since it is a laptop, the liquid could seep into more important components of your computer and cause harm to your computer and possibly yourself.Take the pocket-knife and wedge it in between the sticky key and the base of the keyboard. Your fingernail can also be used as a wedge of it is long enough. Mine are not. You can pop off and clean more than one at a time, just be sure of the keyboard's layout so you do not get confused when replacing the laptop keys.Lift up with the pocket-knife and pop off the key. It might take a little more force than you feel comfortable with, but that is OK. Most keyboard keys are fastened kind of tightly by two very small pieces of plastic and 2 indentations in the key socket. They also tend to be much flatter than a normal desktop keyboard's keys, hence the need of a pocket-knife.Touch the end of a cue-tip to the water ever so slightly. You just want it to be damp - not dripping. Fun Fact: Most electronic devices will be fine if you splash water on them as long as they are completely dry before power is turned back on.Use the cue-tip to clean the underside of the laptop key, the laptop key socket, and the area directly around the socket. The cue-tip makes sure that you lift up all of the stickiness that might be hiding in small places.Replace the key you just cleaned, and press it a few times to make sure it works properly.Repeat steps 5 and 6 until your laptop no longer has sticky keys.

Some keys can simply not be saved, especially if they are broken computer keys because of excessive use and not because of poor use. Replacement laptop keys are typically easy to find online and do not cost more than a couple of dollars per key.

What Does "Managed Services" or "Network Monitoring" Mean?

As companies grow in both size and in the scope of their IT Network infrastructure it becomes important for them to be intimately aware of the health of each machine on their network. This can be a complicated process for most companies, as it can require IT professionals to log in to each machine, monitor the log files, look at the fragmentation of drives, etc. If you have a large network with numerous servers and workstations it can become cost prohibitive and be a major draw down on resources.

The solution to this conundrum is from a service known as "Managed Services" or "Network Monitoring Services" - these services are generally provided by outsourced IT agencies, where they are able to install monitoring tools that report back to the IT company the health details of each machine on the network. This gives them the ability to remotely administer updates, patches, defragmentation, network diagnostics, process bottlenecks, license renewals, and many other valuable metrics for server and network health.

Using managed services provides companies with a proactive methodology for maintaining network health. Studies show that this process of intervening and monitoring prior to a critical failure leads to shorter down-times, faster overall recovery and progressive strategy that does not take away from the core functions of the small business.

You can choose whether to have the IT Company address it and then bill you for the time or to ignore that particular issue. This is the simplest form of network monitoring, and is generally a rather cost effective way of staying aware of your systems health.

The next tier offered will often have several health components monitored and automatically fixed. This can be an excellent entrance into Managed Services, because the IT Company will handle the majority of the issues on your computer system without you having to be involved in the processes, and by doing so you will not have to endure downtime, or can be prepared for system failures and take proactive steps to minimize or eliminate the issues (drive failures, equipment failure, etc).

The top tier Managed Services will generally have included remote support or help desk services, allowing unlimited remote support of the network and computer systems. This can be an excellent way for small businesses to have the benefit of an IT professional without the sizable annual salary of an on-site IT professional.

No matter what your situation or circumstances, it is always a good idea to be as proactive as possible within your business means. It is always easier to handle an issue before it spirals into a critical failure.

The Perfect Humanoid Smile

In the 2004 film I, Robot, when Dr Calvin fills up a crystal tube with nanites (microscopic robots) to wipe out artificial synopsis in Sonny, the 'unique' NS-5, we are caught in a dilemma: do we trust robots? Would we really succeed in creating the perfect machines that follow the three laws of robotics? What if we fail in attempt? Who would scream the loudest: the scientists who are passionate about the twisted logic, the businessmen who care only about the revenue from finding a hundred-million ways to exploit the bots, or the customers who have trustingly accepted the services of the machines?

"You might not know this, but one of my responsibilities as Commander-in-Chief [of the US armed forces] is to keep an eye on robots. And I'm pleased to report that the robots you manufacture here seem peaceful - at least for now." - President Barack Obama

Look around you. You're surrounded by machines that do tasks that are given to them - washing machines, fridges, CD players - but what distinguishes them from robots? Robots, too, are machines that are meant to perform tasks given by us, humans. The word you're looking for is autonomy.

Autonomy is the ability of a rational individual to make a voluntary decision. Autonomous robots can perform tasks in an unstructured environment by adapting themselves to it. So if your washing machine can pick up your dirty clothes, sort them out by colour, wash them, dry them, fold them and re-sort them into different slots of your wardrobe, then yes, your washing machine is a robot.

Many developed countries are already using robots in defence... but not humanoids. Humanoids, the focus of our article, are autonomous robots that resemble humans. Some characteristics of a typical humanoid would be safe interactions with humans, self-learning and self-maintenance. A male humanoid is called android and a female humanoid is known as a gynoid.

Doesn't a question like 'why are we creating mechanic versions of ourselves' pop up in your head? One good reason is: if robots are made to understand and think like humans, working with them would make our lives very productive - they don't tire. But what's going to stop them from jumping around all out of control? That's not going to be a problem for a while because we still have not been able to build a robot that can generate enough power to push itself of the ground.

Another reason is that by developing humanoids, scientists will be able to understand the complexities of the human body and the mind. While developing a humanoid, merging various algorithms into one efficient system is a difficult task.

Sensors, controllers and algorithms

Algorithm is just a fancy word for a set of instructions that effectively take you from problem to solution. One problem is how can we make a humanoid walk? When we walk, our brain tells us how far we should step, whether we should put the right foot first or the left while balancing on narrow paths, when to walk fast and when to slow down.

Similarly, robots get all their signals from controllers. Controllers are processors, like the Intel® microprocessor in your PC. They send pulses to various parts of the bot, like to the limbs. These parts, also called effectors, listen to the controller for commands and they perform the required tasks. If the pulse sent to a leg is high, the processor intends the robot to take a larger step or to push further ahead.

Such calculations are done by algorithms. The balancing algorithm is used to keep the robot walking straight without falling. It does so by balancing the amount of pulse on each leg. The knees and ankles of a humanoid have motors (also called actuators, but let's not have too many technical terms). These motors twist and turn according to the pulse given. The balancing algorithm helps calculate how much pulse should be given to each of these motors.

So we have controllers that do the thinking and we have effectors that implement the controller's thoughts... but where do the thoughts come from? Our brain responds to things that we see, smell, touch, hear and taste; only then can we have the thinking and the response. Humanoids need to sense as well, because they claim to be autonomous.

For this purpose, humanoids are built with sensors. They have proprioceptive sensors for sensing their own orientation, position and even speed, and they have exteroceptive sensors to detect obstacles. Ultrasonic sensors work like bats. They produce high frequency sounds and listen to the echoes. Depending on the intensity of the echo received, the sensor is able to perceive the distance of obstacles. Infrared sensors work on the same principle, but since they use the invisible light spectrum, these sensors cannot detect transparent objects like glass.

Human fingers can feel objects even at the slightest touch and can lift eggs and bulbs with delicacy and steadiness. Humanoids have been clumsy in this matter and there is much work to be done. For starters, the Shadow Robot Company in London has developed a humanoid hand. Each finger tip of the Shadow Hand contains microscopic sensors that can sense objects accurately and, as seen in the video below, can do most human tasks.

Cameras are also used as sensors. By mounting cameras for eyes, the humanoid can get a stereo vision. This is achieved by image processing algorithms that analyse every frame captured and create graphs which the controller can interpret.

One good use of cameras is face recognition. Put yourself ten to fifteen years from now and you have a humanoid helper that looks so much like cute, little Wall-E, who has cameras for eyes. You're tired of reading this never-ending article and you need some time to rest your head. "Wall-E, get me a beer from the fridge!" You have room mates who are busy packing to leave for a trip and are scurrying from room to room.

Your helper finds the can of beer in the fridge and returns to where you were, but you aren't there. With the image processing algorithm, he had smartly marked points of your face and stored it. He goes around matching the face points with anyone who passes by. Finally, he spots you stepping out of the wash room and proudly hands over the can of beer.

Acyut and future humanoids

We grew up watching Star Wars, wishing we had a robot like C3PO to do our homework. May be the Engineers in Honda had a similar wish when they started off with their first humanoid ASIMO. In India, research on humanoids is active in institutes like Birla Institute of Technology and Science, Pilani. Students from this institute have made India's first humanoid, named Acyut.

An interesting fact about this humanoid is that it can be controlled from a distance. The human controlling the robot should wear a body suit. The humanoid will then move according to the body suit's movements. But aren't humanoids supposed to be autonomous? Imagine a man has to undergo bypass surgery in a distant village in India and there are no surgeons available for miles. If humanoids were dispatched to these villages, a surgeon working in Delhi or Mumbai could perform this surgery wearing the body suit.

There are umpteen ways in which we can exploit a humanoid. By understanding how a humanoid works (with motors and processor chips), we get the feeling that they are just heartless machines. Hollywood and science fiction novels have transformed them into smart, almost-human-like beings. Yet, we fail to understand the complexities behind making a perfect replica.

Through various self-learning algorithms, we may successfully create a fully-autonomous humanoid, but what about feelings? A show of facial expressions, such as the Korean gynoid EveR-1, doesn't mean they respond to feelings. They calculate the modulation of the tone of our voice and analyse our facial expressions. Our brains do the same thing. When you see your friend smile, you smile as well. But this reaction is not just a bland reaction to what you see. Your brain sends signal to various chemicals and hormones in your body; there is an overall change in behaviour and is even believed to improve health and reduce stress.

All this does not happen in a humanoid. The calculated reaction when you smile at a humanoid would be: make all the motors of the face align into a smile. There is no hormonal change or mental-state change. If, however, we can replicate this entire pathway in a robot, we may be closer than we are now, to creating the perfect humanoid.

Of course, this would defeat the purpose of creating humanoids. We want them to do our dirty work, don't we? We don't want them to fall in love with us. Or worse, rebel.

We are way underequipped to consider such outcomes. Soon, humanoids will be used in areas with high risk such as oil rigs, outer space and nuclear power plants.

Think about the use of humanoids as soldiers in defence. India is already using Daksh, a remotely controlled robot created by DRDO (Defence Research and Development Organisation), to detect improvised explosive devices (IEDs) and defuse them using a jet of water.

Already, humanoids are used in entertainment - they can sing, they can dance and they can even play the violin. They can be used to take care of the old and can be hired for baby sitting. They can replace constables and traffic police. One day, we hope they would be used in household as well, to protect us and to make us smile.
