It also has a zoom feature where you can zoom in and take advantage of the borderless copy and print. It can reprint photos too. Each photo will be just as beautiful as the last one printed until the toner gets low. When the toner gets low then you will be alerted that you need to think about printing more.

Universal Solar Chargers Advantages and Disadvantages

In these days of ever increasing reliance on technology and gadgets many people have taken the choice to purchase a universal solar charger. With more people purchasing web connected devices, the need for keeping these devices powered is more important than ever.

Solar power works by converting the energy provided by the sun into electricity. Solar panels are made from photo-voltaic cells, these cells were first made by Bell laboratories in the early 1950's. Briefly, photo-voltaic cells work by using the power of light itself. Light is mainly consisted of photons which create an electric imbalance within the photo-voltaic cells upon striking the surface. This electric imbalance then causing an electric current to flow within a circuit created in the device. This current flow can then be used to either power a device directly or, more commonly in the case of a solar charger, be used to charge a battery which can then be used to provide power to another device.

A good universal solar charger will be able to attach to a variety of devices. They connect either via the use of different tips for the devices or they can alternatively physically attach to the batteries which the device may contain. A good quality charger will also be able to fully charge the device using its internal battery.

Its pretty easy to come to the main advantage of a solar charger, mainly that it does not require external power to charge a device. This is extremely handy if you are going to be spending some time away from mains power. Examples include when camping or exploring the great outdoors or when spending time in a music festival which just about has toilets let alone electric!

Solar power is also extremely environmentally friendly. Most domestic power is either generated via coal/gas powered power plants or through nuclear power. Both of these types of power generation produce harmfull byproducts which can harm the environment. Coal/gas burning power stations produce large quantities of greenhouse gases while the risk from radiation produced by nuclear power can never be totally dismissed.

In contrast, solar power is a form of renewable power. Along with wind and tidal power generation it is a clean form of power which creates no greenhouse gases and no radiation risks.

The next big advantage is cost. Once you purchase a solar charger there is no more cost involved in charging your device, unlike mains power which seems to increase in cost every six months!

The biggest disadvantage of solar chargers is that they need light to work. The efficiency of the photo-voltaic panels has increased greatly over the last decade or so, reaching the point where they do not need direct sunlight to work but will now create a satisfactory current even under overcast conditions. But it is still something you should be aware of depending where in the world you are based.

Charging your device via a solar charger can also be a lot slower than using a mains charger. This is due to the current generated by the solar panels being a lot less than what you would find at home. Universal solar chargers try to overcome this by utilising a lithium-ion battery within it. These types of battery are very good at releasing a higher charge than conventional ni-cad batteries, thus they create a higher current in their charging circuit.

This sums up the main pro's and con's of a universal solar charger.

What Is a Human Machine Interface?

A Human Machine Interface or HMI is the graphical display that represents a machine, process, or facility so that the user can easily, intuitively control and monitor the status of such a system.

A simple machine will require a simple interface for the user and not require a HMI. A few indicator lights, some push buttons and switches will be all that is needed to operate a simple machine, say one that presses parts into a casting of some sorts. To quickly give you an idea of what the lights and push buttons would do, is to inform the operator that a part was in place and ready for the next step along the line to a finished piece. The operator would know now the machine is ready, add another component to the part and push the appropriate button to begin the next action.

Way before there where the great color displays of today, a panel (metal, plastic or even wood) would be created and imprinted with a simplified version of the actual process. At key points on this panel, holes wold be drilled and indicators and pilot lights installed. This panel would be mounted on the wall and the panel for the switchgear such as push buttons and selector switches, mounted below. Typically placed at desk height to allow the operator to control the machine or process.

Keep in mind that the Human Machine Interface is just...well... an interface. What I mean is that the real control and intelligence is handled by a controller, usually a PLC, although integrated HMI/PLCs are available. The HMI sends a request for an action by a graphic push button pressed by the operator to the controller. In turn an action is performed though the intelligence programmed into the controller and the machine actual producing the action. The PLC through sensors placed on the machine can send this status to the HMI.

The HMI can be a self-contained touch screen device made specifically to be used with a particular brand of PLC or controller. While others are more universal and can be used with many controllers since they have most communication protocol included or communication drivers available. Usually, you will see these mounted right on the enclosure door of a control cabinet. The HMI is also the user's front end to a SCADA system's controls and databases. Essentially SCADA is the top level of control of a network of PLCs controlling a large, complex process.

Other HMIs make use of a software package and adapter for a common PC. The adapter card is inserted into the PC to enable connection to a specific communication medium and protocol of the control system. Depending on the supplier and the power and complexity, the software package will contain a development system and run-time license. In this way a developer can have one system for creating the design of the HMI and multiple less costly run-time licenses for use on every machine.

Good design is necessary to obtain the most benefit from a Human Machine Interface. The Screens that are created, how they are laid out and how it all flows together can make a huge difference. Generally a Main Screen, Overview screen for each main area or system, a Current Alarms and Alarms History screen are a good start. The Overview screen will provide access to more detailed sub screens through a grouping of push buttons and/or logical drill down points on the Overview screen. Easy navigation to and from connected processes is necessary as well as to the main screens.

Choosing the correct graphics from the included library and creating your own is important for depicting your machine or process so that operator will learn quickly and not become confused.

The included graphic libraries have cool looking indicators, push-buttons, meters, numerical displays, tanks, piping, valves, motors, blowers, etc.

Creating a great HMI is part art, part engineering, part psychology. A thorough understanding of the process is necessary and it can be quite a bit fun, especially for the creative types among us.

Why Tablets Are the Future of Computing

You may have even about tablets being slated to storm the market in the coming years. Many analysts and forecasting companies have already announced them as the next big thing in the world of computing. According to them, tablets will soon outsell netbooks, a form of portable computers that instantly became popular in 2009, resulting in millions of units being sold.

Now that the craze of netbooks finally seems to be getting over, but consumers still preferring to get hold of some form of portable computers, tablets have a great chance of becoming the most widely used form of computing in the next 5-10 years. The only downside to them, that one could think of is that they don't probably match up to personal computers, desktops in particular when it comes to the specifications, since they are only useful for a net-savvy person who spends most of his time online researching information and browsing the web, or occasionally chatting with a few friends as well. Tablets usually come with only 1GB RAM and upto 32GB storage, though some of the latest ones allow you to expand the memory to 64GB via a MicroSD card slot provided in them. But still if you compare them to laptops or netbooks, they are way too behind.

Though tablets may be suited for the average computer user, they are obviously not good enough for gaming or heavy documentation work. But the reason they have taken the market by a storm is not because of their limited features, but because of their mobility. Laptops usually weigh around 6-8 pounds, which is heavy enough for anyone to conveniently carry them anywhere. Netbooks, on the other hand, started selling like hot-cakes only because they weighed almost half of that, somewhere in the range of 3-4 pounds or even less.

But now that spectacular looking tablets that have an incredibly light weight have arrived on the scene, it is almost guaranteed that they are bound to succeed. Plus users also get to enjoy the power of touchscreen, which means they have on-screen keyboards instead of physical ones that now sound outdated. Finally, coming on to the price, this is where tablets seem to clinch the deal. Most of them are available in the markets in the range of $300-$400, and some of them even cost less than 200 bucks, which is incredible considering the value they provide. And with major manufacturers now about to come up with their latest low cost tablets, the device may become even more popular.

Paperless Telecommuting

Much has been said and written about telecommuting in the past decades, and the number of people who work from home has increased dramatically, and will continue to increase, because of the trends outlined earlier. A telecommuter replaces his/her daily commute to the workplace with electronic communication, through the phone and Internet. While many telecommuters have dedicated home offices from which they perform work tasks, some telecommuters, called nomad workers, perform work tasks from any number of locations such as cafés, bookstores and libraries.

While telecommuting has been promoted by many organizations and enterprises, it is also associated with some disadvantages, both for the employer and the employee. To some degree, these criticisms have hampered the implementation of telecommuting programs. But these points of disadvantage, in many cases, can be resolved through paperless practices with Information & Communication Technology ICT devices and software. Going paperless will facilitate many aspects of telecommuting, and I will address some of these here.

Telecommuters often find themselves isolated, because they lack face-to-face interaction with colleagues, supervisors and clients. And this dearth of personal interactions with colleagues can even lead to a lack of loyalty toward employers and colleagues.

When telecommuting is done in a paper-based fashion, the telecommuter still ends up confined to a location, with limited mobility and complicated practices regarding the access, distribution and sharing of documents and work files. A paperless workstyle that enables total mobility of the office, however, will allow workers to more easily arrange and engage in personal, face-to-face interactions with others. A paperless workstyle can deliver telecommuters from the boundaries of their home office, and allow for the occasional nomadic workstyle that will bring them into contact with colleagues or simply other people, instead of being isolated at their homes. A paperless office can also enable the telecommuter to occasionally use the employer's leased or rented office facilities to interact in a more direct way with colleagues and supervisors.

To develop and maintain friendships with colleagues and supervisors while telecommuting, an employee or employer can ritualize routines in which co-workers engage in daily chat sessions, or have their cyber-coffee together at specific pre-arranged times. Another bonding mechanism might be for colleagues to interact in a more informal manner by playing stimulating games with each other through the Internet.

One of the reasons that face-to-face communication is so important is that a large proportion of communications taking place between two or more individuals is conveyed by nonverbal means such as body language, facial expressions, eye contact and tone of voice. The information conveyed through these types of communication will obviously become compromised through a phone, or even a regular webcam.

Virtual teams, also called Geographically Dispersed Teams (GDT), consist of people who work together across time, space and even organizational boundaries, through ICT. A member of a virtual team is not necessarily synonymous with a teleworker, though, for a couple of reasons: (1) that team member may not exclusively work from home, and (2) virtual teams frequently consist of employees who work both from home but also in smaller groups in offices at different geographic locations. Virtual teams enable hiring and retainment of talent regardless of location. It is obvious how paperless work practices can greatly facilitate the operations of dispersed, or virtual, work teams. Because they rely on electronic communication, they can greatly benefit from paperless practices in document sharing and mobility. A good source to learn more about how to enjoy the advantages of a paperless work-style is the book by George Dimopoulos, Paperless Joy.

Those who introduce paperless practices in their daily work routines will be able to enjoy many advantages. I am specifically addressing paperlessness from the telecommuting perspective in this article, that will be beneficial at the individual, organizational, corporate, societal and global level.

Interior Decor Games - A Boon in Today's Booming Home Decorating Industry

Interior decorating games are quite popular among home-makers these days - they are popularized by the rising influence of the internet, as well as the advancements in technology. They're quite a new entry to the age-old systems of planning by hand, and they're one of the most useful advancements in the field of home decoration. There are many types of design games available on the internet, and they cover a vast genre of games - from things like computer simulation of a room, to 2-D creation of your own house. This genre of games stimulates the mind, brings forth one's inner creativity to the fore, and can actually be a handy tool while one is actually thinking of preparing a home decorating plan.

Computer simulations of interiors and the enabling of decoration of the same helps us have a rough idea of what the interior of a room or the house would look like, while planning out the interior decor of our own home. Moreover, it is very helpful in creating the same environment and enables experimentation at almost no cost. Experimentation with home decor is often a crucial component of decorating a house, and simulation makes the task much more palatable, enjoyable and fun. It must be also be noted, that these games are a huge benefit to designers that are work in the home decor industry. Simulation is so very important for them in their work, as most designers will be expected to show detailed plans of what they intend to do to a customer's house. Simulation takes away the dull and drab paperwork consisting of lines and lines of text on technicalities, and makes it a much more interactive and efficient system. Pictures of finished interiors can be used to market a particular designer, and also help the customer in choosing what they'd like their interiors to be like even before they spend money on the accessories and necessities of decoration.

In summary, decorating simulations, while being new, have been quite a welcome addition to the home design business. They enhance productivity and can reach out to designers and professionals, as well as the odd home-maker that wants to change the inner decor of their home. Enabling interactivity, cost effectiveness, and quite a remarkable simulation of reality, they're truly a boon in today's booming interior decorating industry, which has for long been a victim of tedious and time-consuming techniques of design with a lot of work done solely by hand.

Computer Desktop CPU Fans

A CPU or central processing unit is the main part of a computer desktop. There are many components in a computer desktop like the motherboard, hard drive, processor, and other essential parts that make up a functional computer. The fan is a very important for a computer desktop because it keeps the computer cool while it is working.

If the fan is not working then the computer will automatically shut down because it is overheating. Using a computer without a fan can permanently damage the components and soon it will not turn on at all. Most people who use computers are not computer technicians. Many people like myself use the computers for business, education, and entertainment. When something goes wrong with the computer, people either send it to a computer technician, or in extreme cases, trash the current computer that is not working and buy a new one. Either way, fixing the problem is expensive.

One of the cheapest ways is to fix the problem yourself. Fixing a computer yourself is scary, especially if you don't know how. Most of the components that make up the computer are actually practical to fix because the components are easy to install. For example: the fan in a typical computer desktop is easy to plug-in. Aside from viruses and physical accidents, overheating due to faulty or broken fans is also a major problem in computer operations.

It is very frustrating when you are doing something very important on your computer and it fails because it overheated. If you are going to fix or replace the CPU fan yourself it would be best if you can find the plans or instructions to help guide you. You can either go online or go to the library and look for the company that built your computer. Generally most computer desktops are the same, but depending on the brand or type, some fans are in different parts of the computer. The CPU fan could be next to the mother board, but in most cases, it is usually located by the power supply. The fan and the power supply are usually in the rear of the computer desktop. Here are a few simple steps in replacing a fan for a typical computer desktop.

1) Before you even start replacing the CPU fan, you must make sure that you have the right fan. Not all fans fit different computer desktops. Each computer company has their own CPU fans for their computers. Always check with a certified store clerk or computer technician to make sure that the fan you are buying is the one for your computer desktop. You can start replacing the fan on your computer desktop once you have the right one.

2) Start by taking off the computer casing. The casing is either screwed or snapped down by a lever. Most casings are held in place by screws, so you will need a screw driver. If the casing has screws, remove the screws, take off the casing and place it on the side. Keep the screws close to the casing.

3) Look for the CPU fan, it is most likely mounted by a few screws next to the mother board and/or the power supply. You must take the screws off to replace the old fan. Most fans are simple plug-in. To remove the old CPU fan, unplug it and then plug-in the new fan. (If you bought a new fan from the computer store, chances are it will come with instructions on how to replace the fan.)

4) Once you have replaced the CPU fan, remount it. Don't put the computer casing on yet you need to check and see if the fan works. Plug in the computer and turn it on. After you have checked if the fan works shut it off and put the casing back on and screw it back in place. That's it! If you are not sure about changing the CPU fan by yourself, you can always get help online through computer or technical forums. You can also check through search engines. There are also technical chat rooms online that can help guide you.

Leased Lines: Adding Value to Businesses

Leased Line is of great importance to businesses in today's times. Through this article we will find out what are these lines? And what benefits businesses have with these dedicated lines? This private data line is a dedicated line that provides its user with assured Internet Bandwidth and also helps businesses in connecting two remotely located offices. This connection is considered to be the most cost effective option, especially for those who have heavy telephonic and internet use. Many companies choose this option, if their offices are based in more than one location. This connection is a continuous service and the information sent through this service moves along dedicated secure channel, reducing the barriers that crop up usually in a shared network.

Most Internet Service Providers offer these dedicated line services. This connection helps in connecting separate offices and buildings so that they can share data. When the businesses are linked you have the ability to have peer to peer Voice over IP (VoIP) and even share data and other services within your servers all at no additional expenses. An office to office private connection allows important information to be sent securely. This fibre line is symmetric and offers its user same dedicated upload and download speeds. Offices in multiple locations will find this extremely advantageous when data is needs to be received immediately.

Leased Line requires that a fixed line be connected to your location office location for which a user makes an annual rent to the Internet Service Provider. A separate router or hub should also be installed at the location as that provides the doorway for access to web. The line, which is always on, unlike conventional phone line, guarantees consistent and stable connection. These data lines are also established directly on a case by case private basis, the service providers who offer them can assure a level of quality, steadiness and Internet Bandwidth that is sometimes not available to users with standard connections. The line comes along with an inbuilt security, assuring that any harmful entities do not enter the system and harms the data security. This private line also helps in the growth of business, allows it to be productive and enables better communication between colleagues and clients. The lines are also backed up with a service level agreement (SLA) to provide support and dependability of the network. Though it is generally an expensive procedure, it is still a viable option for any business that needs a faster communication speeds.

The author has over 4 years experience and is now associated with Net4, a leading internet service provider. He likes to write about services, including leased line, data center, Internet services and dedicated server India.

Why LEDs Are Becoming the Lighting of Choice for Boaters

Ask any group of boaters what their biggest gripe with their boat is, and it's a safe bet that the cost of fuel and electricity use are close to the top of the list of complaints. It doesn't matter if you have a small sailboat of a large cruiser, you're going to need electricity, and the only way to get it is to generate it onboard yourself. This means boats must use generators, batteries, solar panels and wind generators that take up space, add weight, use fuel, or are simply unreliable. As more and more electronics make their way onboard our vessels, the need for power only grows. This growth in power demand tends to lead to boaters having to install more batteries, larger capacity generators, and burn more fuel to maintain energy reserves at a safe level. Worse, despite having all these new electronics onboard, more often than not they are used only sparingly as boaters find themselves having to literally ration that use of electrical power in order to maintain a practical balance between fuel consumption and time on the water.

One of the best additions to the boaters array of electrical devices, however, has the potential to have a direct and beneficial impact on all of this power management complexity and annoyance. Since boaters first began retrofitting LEDs into existing onboard light fixtures, the potential for LEDs to produce significant reductions in onboard power usage has been to overwhelming to ignore. Although LEDs were first installed by DIY'ers and were of dubious effectiveness, LEDs have quickly improved in output and light quality and now surpass most halogen and fluorescent marine lights in color quality, efficiency, longevity and light output. Even better, the small size of the LED and its ability to operate on direct current without any need for ballast or special transformers makes it an ideal lighting solution for the oftentimes space challenged confines of a boat.

With the growth in popularity of LEDs within boating circles, aftermarket manufacturers were quick to jump into the fray and begin offering LED lighting products capable of directly replacing the traditional incandescent fixtures on boats. Whether it's an entire fixture to be replaced, or simply a bulb, there are now likely several LED options available that will fit the bill. Easy to install, lasting for in some cases up to ten years, LEDs have certainly come into their own as far as the boating community is concerned. Sure there are holdouts, but more often than not, once they see for themselves just how effective the light output and energy savings from LEDs really is, they come down off the fence in short order.

LEDs are so much more efficient than incandescent bulbs because they produce light in a totally different way. Rather than heating a filament to produce light, which results in most of the electrical energy being wasted as heat, LEDs produce light through a process called electroluminescence. Rather than go into long and complicated explanations, suffice it to say that in an LED, electricity is fed to a specially coated type of semi-conducting material, which sort of rearranges the electrons and then emits them as photons, which is more commonly known as visible light. Since this process does not rely on electrical resistance to literally heat a filament until it is hot enough to emit light radiation and heat, it is much more efficient as little electrical energy is wasted. Instead, little energy is required to produce electroluminescence, and more of the energy is emitted as light. Even better, since the process only works one way in an LED, direct or DC current is the native type of power for an LED. This means no ballasts, inverters, or converters are needed to power an LED. In most cases, LED marine lights instead use solid state electronics to manage the flow of electricity to the LEDs. These electronics are known as LED drivers and are very compact and durable. LED drivers work to keep a steady current level going into the LED and allow a wide variety of voltages to be used, usually anywhere from 9 to 50 VDC. For boaters with 12 or 24VDC electrical systems, this means that hooking up LED lights can be as simple as screwing in a bulb or wiring in a light fixture.

Although the cost of an LED fixture is higher than an incandescent, the allure of the LED remains great due to their extreme efficiency and long life-span. If you consider that an average cruiser can use up to 70-100 amps just powering all of its lights, and that LEDs can cut that use by three quarters, it's clear there's a lot of savings in fuel use to be had. Additionally, when you realize that a typical halogen boat light rarely lasts more than a season or two, and that LEDs can last for up to ten years, the savings in bulb replacements alone can pay for the LED fixture in short order. Particularly with exterior illumination, like with spreader lights, LEDs quite simply make the halogens that came before them obsolete. Consider the Magnalight 40 Watt LED Light bar for instance. Compact, drawing only 40 watts, and using only 3 amps, this light produces 3,600 lumens. This is as much light as 4-5 50 watt halogen lamps that would normally need at least 12-16 amps to provide the same performance. Better, the LEDs are sealed, impervious to shattering, and produce very little heat. Add in that the LEDs will last for at least 40-50,000 hours or more as compared to the halogens 500-1500 hours, and you have what is commonly known as a no brainer decision.

Although LEDs remain a bit more expensive than incandescent bulbs, the savings in power and maintenance costs are simply too significant to make their initial cost a valid or prohibitive consideration. Long life, significant savings in energy and fuel consumption, and all around better lighting quality is making LEDs the new lighting of choice for boaters of all stripes regardless of whether they have a weekender or a long range full on cruiser.

Choosing an Effective Surveillance Camera System

Many activities happen in most places in a city. Different exchanges of activities transpire everyday in business establishments, schools, hospitals, streets, offices, and homes among others. Most often than not, these activities are often delayed or impeded with various crimes. These crimes include burglary, traffic violations, or even murder. Thus, the normal flow of activities is interrupted as crimes get in the way.

This is one of the most common reasons why many people are opting to install a surveillance camera system in their homes, businesses, offices, and other places where they conduct their everyday activities. Police departments likewise use security surveillance cameras to spot crimes such as over-speeding, robbery, and other threats to security. Security cameras systems are considered non-lethal tools that can stop criminals from doing their thing.

Setting up a surveillance camera system allows passive observation of the things happening around your area. Most often than not, surveillance cameras include infrared detectors, motion detectors, and ultra-sensitive microphones. Some people choose to connect their security cameras or surveillance cameras to a nerve network center of a police station so that response can easily be rendered in case a crime happens in their areas.

For a larger scope of surveillance, some people set up CCTV camera systems or security camera systems in strategic places within their vicinity. Operators of these security systems are able to call for help as soon as they observe a crime. Thus, police officers are able to arrive as quickly as they can to respond to the scene of the crime. Security camera systems are all capable of recording images and sounds, which makes them useful as evidence for proving a crime or convicting criminals.

When choosing to set up surveillance or security systems, you should consider several important identifiers. You should remember that criminals usually attack when the situation is perfect for their plans. However, if they are aware of the cameras in their target area, they tend to leave for fear of being caught in the video for evidence. Thus, you should set up your surveillance cameras in places where they are visible to people.

For most business establishments, announcing the presence of their CCTV systems works as criminals or lawbreakers are stopped from doing their unlawful acts. Criminals or lawbreakers do not want to get caught or taped in videos while doing their stuff. In fact, the crime rates for areas that announce the presence of their CCTV systems are much lower as compared to those that hide their surveillance systems.

As much as possible, it is preferable to install or set up surveillance systems near the vicinity of policemen. This is to quicken the response rates of police officers as well as apprehend criminals as quickly as possible. If the operators of the surveillance systems are trained enough, they will also be able to determine the number of police officers needed to respond to the crime. The operators can also guide the policemen on how they can act upon the crime.

Comparison of EPUB Vs PDF Publishing Format

The burgeoning popularity of ebooks has led to the introduction of numerous reading devices such as the iPad, Kindle and Sony Reader. The easy availability of e-books on hordes of topics in various formats have contributed significantly to the usability of these reading devices. Among the more popular ebook formats of the day are PDF (Portable Document Format) and EPUB (Electronic Publication). Here is a look at how they compare with each other.

PDF 101

A product of Adobe Systems. PDF was launched in 1993 as the open standard for the exchange of documents. However, it was officially released in 2008; the format aids in the easy printing of documents and facilitates their sharing online. The original layout of the document is retained in PDF.

EPUB 101

Launched by the International Digital Publishing Forum in 2007, EPUB is a free and open standard format for e-books and other documents. It offers optional style sheets and is based on XML and XHTML.

EPUB vs. PDF

Popularity: PDF plug-ins, support tools, solutions, creations etc are offered by a whopping 1800 vendors all cross the world. On the other hand, the fairly recent launch of EPUB has meant that the format has yet to garner this level of support

Layout: When a PDF file is created, its visual aspects such as images, tables and other elements will retain their original layout. A PDF file will be displayed the same regardless of the device used to view it. EPUB scores over PDF in this aspect with its support of reflowable content; an EPUB file can be optimized to offer a superlative reading experience based on the device being used.

Versatility: PDF allows the user to highlight text, take notes, annotate and more; on the other hand, EPUB does not allow editing.

Open Standard: Unlike PDF, EPUB is an open standard format which means that it is accessible to just about anybody without a fee

Accessibility: PDF offers assistive technology which helps to make information more accessible to people with disabilities; EPUB does not have this function.

Readability: One of the drawbacks of using PDF is the same appearance of the files regardless of the application used to create and view them. So, when a printed book is scanned into PDF it will look just like the paper version. While PDF works just fine when used on PC or Mac; it's readability leaves a lot to be desired. Readers have to go through the trouble of opening a PDF file and constantly zooming in and out to adjust the size of the page for better reading. EPUB scores here as the reflowable content feature makes the page fit the screen size of the device that the book is being read on.

Security: PDF has superlative security features that include digital sign, so it is possible to protect an ebook in the PDF format with restrictions and with an open password. An immense amount of sensitive data is available in the PDF format online just because the information can be protected in this format. An EPUB file can contain DRM as an option; however, it is not a mandatory requirement.

Interactivity: PDF files can easily be bookmarked or links can be inserted in them, so it is simpler to navigate to the internet from the file. It is also possible to create interactive PDF files with the Adobe Reader. EPUB does not support interactivity.

Both EPUB and PDF have advantages and disadvantages associated with their use, so it would be meaningless to conclude that one format is better than the other. The choice of format should depend on the device that will be used to view the ebook. If the original format is not compatible with a reader, it would make sense to change it.

Moore's Law: 1960s Vision, Current Reality

In September of 1962, John F. Kennedy articulated his now famous vision that launched the U.S. space program: "We choose to go to the moon in this decade." These words set into motion a space race that culminated in Neil Armstrong's moon walk seven years later on July 20, 1969. The full text of Kennedy's '62 speech reveals that his space challenge was part of a larger theme, namely the breathtaking pace of technological change being harnessed for the future. Kennedy's was just one of several visions about scientific progress in the '60s that would transform the world.

Another was a powerful prediction that completely changed the technology industry and its economics. In 1965 Gordon Moore, one of the founding fathers of the computer industry (he co-founded Intel), created one of the most widely known principles in the field of IT. Moore's Law predicted that the number of transistors on a chip would double about every two years. It further promised lower costs and increased innovation as a direct outcome.

To maintain status quo in today's marketplace, it is imperative for business leaders to develop proactive strategies for technology and data management based on Moore's prediction, including: 1) Invest wisely - find the right strategic partners; 2) Start small, learn and gain some early wins; 3) Organize for success; and 4) Think differently about data.

For forty years the industry has focused on the cost/productivity side of Moore's prediction, for the most part ignoring his more subtle but also more powerful message about the accelerating pace of innovation. In hindsight it's not surprising that the pace of innovation and our ever increasing appetite for technology have driven overall IT costs higher. This is now creating pressure on operating plans and tension between CIOs and CFOs of corporations whose CEOs had expected IT costs would be declining because of the populist belief regarding the trajectory of the IT industry.

The availability of better technology and the insights it makes possible are what feeds our growing appetite for data. Companies today collect more data than ever before; they use powerful algorithms to find patterns in it to solve all sorts of real-life problems that were previously unsolvable. A 2008 International Data Corporation (IDC) study projected that, in 2010, the world would create more than 1,200 exabytes of data (one exabyte is one quintillion bytes of data). This projection proved true, forcing retailers and fast moving consumer goods manufacturers to become increasingly proficient at finding new insights in large amounts of data. Historically, data was aggregated because the complexity of queries required it, or because disaggregated data didn't exist or was too costly.

Traditionally, companies have utilized data to understand what happened yesterday or today. To compete in the marketplace, data is now being used to predict what will happen in the future. To do so, companies are increasingly capturing real-time disaggregated data and analyzing information flows in real time, improving their ability to accurately project the future. In his books The Power of Now and The Power to Predict, Vivek Ranadive describes an evolution over time to event-driven business models where the need for real-time information is creating a "data explosion." Ranadive reaffirms that CPU, memory and storage costs have declined over the past 40 years as Moore predicted, but the costs to store and process exponentially increasing amounts of data, and the need for smart people to analyze it, have increased at the same rate. This is the paradox of Moore's Law.

As companies consider strategies for managing and productizing data, there are multiple needs to be met. At The Nielsen Company, our goal is to provide our customers with direct access to real-time disaggregated data, allowing them to better predict future outcomes in their businesses. We proactively invest in products and processes that truly differentiate our business and allow our clients to combine data in ways never before possible. Recognizing that no one company has the human or financial capital to go it alone, we nurture strategic partnerships with world-class hardware and software companies to help us deliver our vision. Our approach is to start with small projects, learn fast, fail faster, get some wins, and apply learnings. We ignore organizational boundaries, assembling empowered teams that are rewarded for innovation, quality and speed. Our culture embodies a relentless focus on the quality and timeliness of the data we provide to customers.

Moore's Law foresaw an era of greater innovation, the specifics of which were understandably blurry in the '60s. Today, innovation drives clients to demand insights faster and faster and to collect more and more real-time data. I meeting this demand, IT departments have to spend more, despite lower component costs and increased performance. At the end of the day, Moore's Law, which has been a catalyst for major transformation of business, government and science, may require a reinterpretation.

When Kennedy articulated his vision about space in 1962, he acknowledged that the journey would not be without risk. He recognized that we were venturing into areas that were not well understood. Just three years later, before the microprocessor even existed, Gordon Moore made an equally compelling prediction that would define the modern history of technology. Fast forward to today: despite the visible accomplishments of the past forty years, the future of the U.S. space program appears somewhat uncertain. The technology industry, which has also enjoyed four decades of unprecedented growth, thanks in part to Gordon Moore, is now venturing into uncharted territory as we begin to address the accelerating demand for real-time, disaggregated data.

How to Sell and Buy Computer Parts for Profit

You can make a great living selling computers parts. The easy part is actually selling the units. The difficult part of this business is finding a great deal on price. You can make a great living selling salvaged computers and parts. The easy part is actually selling the units. The difficult part of this business is finding a great deal on price. There are thousands of computer parts and accessories all over the web. eBay and Amazon are great places to start. However, my favorite place to buy computers and parts is Property Room. Most all the laptops and desktops on Property Room come without hard drives and power cords. I seem to always find them on Amazon or eBay however. You can get great deals on drives, storage and memory parts. They also offer software on the site and is priced very cheap. It is a police auction site for the public that has great deals on computers, parts, accessories and other items. I can get a good processor on this site very cheap. However, you must read all the descriptions and understand that some of the units are salvaged and missing parts. Take for example-- a laptop selling for 45.00 that needs a hard drive and power cord. I simply go to Amazon.com and buy the power cord for $4 to $15.00. The hard drive can be purchased at Amazon also and eBay. I paid 26.00 for a 40gb hard drive for a HP Compaq nc6220 I purchased from Property Room. I then bought a power cord for 4.00 on Amazon. So I have approx 86.00 in this unit and could sell it for $250.00 easily. I like Amazon for parts because you can choose which company to buy from and most the time shipping is free.

So your selling process in this business is: Buy the computer parts on Property Room. You will need hard drives and power cords which can be purchased on Amazon and eBay.com. I also use Compuvest to buy parts at big discounts. They have clearance specials that can be purchased for almost nothing. You can then buy your software cheap on Amazon for the finished product to sell online. Once you start this process your business will grow and you will be able to stock more parts and sell more units online at large profit.

I have given you some ideas about where to buy computers parts etc. You will understand a little more as you grow your business.
